Reading level you set
Move the words up or down as their confidence changes.
What it is
Every child on your account carries a reading level, and it decides how we write the words: sentence length, vocabulary, and how much is left for them to work out. It starts from their age and school year, and you can move it yourself whenever you want.
What it is for
A book pitched slightly high gets put down, and one pitched low gets finished with a shrug. Reading confidence moves in months, and it moves both ways, because an unsettled term can take some of it back. The level is a dial you keep rather than a number fixed on the day you signed up, so a child who has just clicked can be given richer sentences that same evening.
How to use it
- Tap Kids in the sidebar, then tap the child whose books you want to change.
- Scroll to Tune their books, the part of the form about how their books are written.
- Drag the Reading level slider. The badge beside it names the level as you move, so you can see what you are choosing.
- Tap Save Changes at the foot of the form. Every book made after that is written to the new level, and the books already on the shelf are untouched.
- Tap Reset to auto whenever you want the level to follow their age again.
What we suggest
Leave it alone until a book tells you something. If they skip words and lose the thread, come down a step. If they read it in one sitting and ask for the next, go up a step. Move a single step at a time, and read a whole book before moving again.
