Reading on screen

Every book you make can be read on your screen. On a wide screen it opens as two facing pages, on a phone one page at a time, and it remembers where you stopped.

A parent opens Grandpa Joe’s Secret Birthday Map and turns the pages, taps a word and asks Bix what it means, asks about a whole sentence, bookmarks a page with the ribbon, then makes the words bigger and the page dim in Reader Settings. Opening the book again takes them straight back to their page.

Open a book

  1. In your Library, press Read on any book.
  2. Turn the pages with the arrows at the top, the folded corner of a page, the arrow keys on your keyboard, or a swipe on a phone.
  3. Press Table of Contents to jump to a chapter.

Ask Bix about a word or a sentence

  • A word: tap any word in the story, then press Ask Bix. The card says what it means in this story, gives a plain meaning, similar words, often opposite words, and a sentence to try it in.
  • A whole sentence: drag across it, then press Ask Bix. Bix explains what is happening and the tricky words in it.
  • Press the speaker at the top of the card to hear the word or sentence said aloud.
  • Tap anywhere outside the card to close it. If the book was reading itself aloud, it pauses while the card is open and carries on after.

Make the page just right

Press Reader Settings (the first button, top left).

  • A+ and A− make the words bigger or smaller.
  • Bright, Paper or Dim changes the page. Dim is lovely for reading in a dark room at bedtime.
  • You can also pick the font and the colour of the words.

Keep your place

Tap the ribbon at the top of the page to bookmark it. Tap it again to take the bookmark off. There is one bookmark per book, so tapping the ribbon on another page moves it there.

Next time you open the book, press Continue from page … to go to your bookmark, or Last read to go to the page you were on when you stopped. Start over begins again from the cover.
