Help · Making a story · about 2 minutes

Your first story

Your child is the hero of every book. It takes a couple of minutes to set up, and Bix does the rest.

A parent presses Start an adventure, picks a Grade 3 Science lesson about fossils, brings Grandpa, Mom and Biscuit the dog into the story, chooses Painted Realism and picks one of three story ideas. A few minutes later, Alice and the Hidden Fossil Cliff is ready on the shelf.

1. Choose what it is about

In your library, press Start an adventure. Pick the kind of story: Curriculum Journey, Life Skills & Values, STEM Focus or Your Own Idea.

In the video we chose Curriculum Journey, so the story teaches something from school. Your child’s grade and your state’s standards are already set: pick a subject (we picked Science), then the lesson you would like the story to teach. We chose Grade 3 Science: what fossils tell us about long ago. Lessons your child has already met in a book are marked, and new ones say New.

2. Choose who is in the story

Your child is already the hero. Tap any face to bring someone along: a parent, a grandparent, a friend or the family pet. Up to six people can be in a book, and up to three can be heroes. In the video Alice brought Grandpa, Mom and Biscuit the dog.

3. Set the scene

Pick a tone, a writing style and a place, or just leave them to Bix.

4. Choose how it looks

Pick a picture style. Every tile shows the same scene, so they are easy to compare. We picked Painted Realism.

5. Pick your favourite idea

Press Show Story Ideas and Bix writes three, each a different kind of story. Each card gives the title, how it begins, who is in it, and the place and writing style behind it. Anything you left to Bix shows here, so you can see what it chose.

Press Start this story on the one you want. That is when one book credit is spent, and the writing and drawing begin.

6. Watch it being made

Your book appears in your library straight away while Bix writes and draws it. It takes a few minutes, and you can close the app and come back. When it is ready, press Read, or add a voice to listen together. Tap the book’s cover to see everything you chose for it.
