Who is in the book

Up to six people can be in one story, and up to three of them can be the heroes. Brothers and sisters can share the lead, and Grandma, a best friend or the family dog can come along.

A parent with two children picks who the story is for and a topic on how animals work together in groups. On the Cast step Leo becomes a hero beside his sister Alice, Grandpa Joe and Biscuit the dog come along, and Grandma is added with Add someone. The finished book shows all five of them together.

How to do it

  1. Press Start an adventure. If you have more than one child, first choose who the story is for. That sets the reading level and whose school lessons it follows. It does not decide who is in it.
  2. On the Cast step, tap a face to bring that person into the story.
  3. Tap the ★ on someone’s card to make them a hero.
  4. Someone missing? Tap Add someone, type their name and choose who they are, such as Grandma, Friend or Pet. Add a photo if you have one, or describe them and Bix draws a portrait.
  5. Carry on with the scene, the picture style and a story idea as usual.

Adding a pet or companion

A parent opens Kids and presses Add Companion, types Barnaby, chooses Pet, taps Playful and Loyal, adds a photo of the golden retriever and saves him. In a new story for Leo, Barnaby is already on the Cast step: one tap brings him in and his star makes him a hero beside Leo and Mia. The video then points at Add someone, the same form on the Cast step. The finished book, The Starlight Signal Mission, has Barnaby in the middle of the cover.

A companion is anyone you keep beside your children in the app: a dog, a cat, a grandparent, a teacher, a best friend, or someone made up. You save them once, and they can be in any book after that. A pet can be a hero too.

  1. Open Kids and press + Add Companion. In the middle of a story? Tap Add someone on the Cast step instead: it is the same form.
  2. Type their name and choose what they are in the Relationship list. Pet is one of the choices, and Other lets you type your own.
  3. Tap the traits under Personality that fit them.
  4. Add a photo if you have one. For an animal, one photo of the whole animal works best.
  5. Press Add Companion. Saved from Kids, they wait on the Cast step of every story: tap their picture to bring them in. Added from the Cast step, they join this book straight away. Tap the ★ on their card to make them a hero.
