Read along, word by word

The book reads itself out loud with real expression, lighting up each word as it is said and turning its own pages, so they can always see exactly where they are.

What it is

A recorded voice reads a finished book aloud. The word being spoken lights up on the page and the book turns its own pages, so they can always see where the voice has reached. You choose the voice and the accent, pay for that reading once, and it plays free from then on.

What it is for

A child still working out every word spends their effort on the letters and none on the story. Hearing it read while the words light up puts the two back together. It also hands a whole book to a child who cannot yet read alone, and it plays with the book closed, so a car journey needs no screen.

How to use it

  1. Open Library and pick a finished book from the shelf.
  2. Tap Add a voice on its card to open the voice picker.
  3. Tap a voice under The voice to hear it, then choose one under The accent.
  4. Tap Read it aloud and give it a few minutes. The card says Recording… while the voice is made, then Listen.
  5. Tap Listen for the voices panel: Read along opens the book with the words lighting up, and Just listen plays it with nothing on screen. In Kid Mode, Read aloud on the card plays straight away.

What we suggest

Buy the first reading in a voice you would not put on yourself. Buying one is yours alone, but playing it is not, so they can start it themselves whenever they want. Add another voice later if that one wears thin, because every reading you have bought stays.
