STEM Focus

A STEM Focus book is an adventure that teaches one science, math or engineering idea. Your child finds it out as part of the story.

A parent chooses STEM Focus, types how volcanoes erupt as their own topic, checks it and presses Looks right, brings Dad and Alice’s brother Leo along, and a few minutes later Alice and the Rumbling Mountain, set at Mount St. Helens, is on the shelf.

Two ways to choose the topic

In your library, press Start an adventure (on a phone, New Adventure), then choose STEM Focus.

  • Let Bix choose: Bix picks an exciting discovery that suits your child’s age. Handy when you want a good story tonight.
  • Your Topic: you decide what the story teaches, from rainbows to the periodic table. Not sure? Tap one of the ideas under the box.

Check your topic

Type your topic and press Check topic. Bix shows what it will bring into the story, so you know what your child will learn before anything is spent. Press Looks right, or Edit to change it.

A big topic (say, the whole solar system) gets a plan: Bix tells you which parts go deep and which get a quick mention.

Then as usual

Pick who is in the story, set the scene, choose a picture style and pick one of three story ideas. In the video Alice picked how volcanoes erupt, and Dad and her brother Leo came along. A few minutes later Alice and the Rumbling Mountain was on her shelf, set at Mount St. Helens.
