Kid Mode

They can read, but not buy or change anything. A parent's PIN keeps it that way.

What it is

Kid Mode is a lock you turn on from the account menu, held shut by a four digit Parent PIN. With it on, a child can open the app and read their books. Anything that spends money, or that changes a profile or the account, is refused until the PIN is entered again.

What it is for

The tablet gets handed over and you go and do something else. What you do not want in that hour is a credit pack bought, a book started, a profile rewritten or a story deleted. Kid Mode settles all of that once. It is not a lock on the device: they can still leave the app, and it was never meant to stop them.

How to use it

  1. Open the account menu and press Enter Kid Mode.
  2. Create your Parent PIN when it asks. Four digits, one for the whole account.
  3. Choose which child this session belongs to, if you have more than one.
  4. Hand the tablet over. Buying, starting a book, editing a profile and the Privacy and data page are all shut while the lock is on.
  5. Press Exit Kid Mode and enter the same PIN to lift it.

What we suggest

Pick a PIN they cannot get from a birthday. The lock belongs to the session you turned it on in, so turn it on again on a second tablet rather than assuming it travelled. And read it for what it is: it stops the actions that cost you money, not a curious child.
